A practical skill of creating a WBS structure for a project definition
When we are creating a WBS structure for a project, we sometimes use the transaction code CJ20N, which contains many useful functions. As the screenshot below, we type the codes and descriptions of the WBS elements we want to create. But the we forgot to change the level of the WBS elements, all of their level is the default value ‘1’ , which we can see in the red box of the screenshot. In fact, we want the levels of the WBS elements from Z/005-001 to Z/005-004 are ‘2’.
Please don’t be panic, we can follow the menu path ‘Project-> Derive structure-> Execute’, and once we click the ‘Execute’, the SAP system will arrange the level of the WBS elements automatically. The executing result is shown below, we can see the levels of some WBS elements are changed into ‘2’, and this is definitely what we want.
Maybe you will ask ‘how can the system know the specific WBS elements’ level are 2?’ That’s because of the coding mask of the project, from the screenshot below we can see the coding mask of the project Z/005 is ‘Z/000-XXX-000/XXXX’. For example, from the coding mask, the SAP system can recognize that the level of the WBS element Z/005-001 is ‘2’. And so on, if the code of a WBS element is Z/005-001-001, its level will be settled as ‘3’.
